Hélène Vassal is Chief Curator specialised in preventive conservation, registration, collection and exhibition management. Since 2023 she has been appointed as Director of Collections Support at the Musée du Louvre after 3 years at the Institut National du Patrimoine as Deputy Director in charge of Continuing Education for Heritage Professionals in France and abroad and 7 years at the Centre Pompidou as Head of Registration Office than Head of Collections Management Department. In 2022 she directed the publication of the first French-language handbook on museum registration published. She has participated over the last thirty years in the creation and renovation of many museums and storage facilities including the Musée du Quai Branly, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Musée Guimet and the Centre National des Arts Plastiques.
Her teaching (at Ecole du Louvre, Sorbonne Abu Dhabi or Institut National du Patrimoine) and her involvement with ICOM since 1998 (as elected board member in the French Committee and ICTOP) sparked her focus on the intersection of heritage and sustainable development and inspired her to develop training programmes on sustainable collections management and to commit to the subject.
Until 2019 she coordinates the ICOM France sustainability group and manage several projects as webinar cycles, conferences, publications, collaborative project at a French and international level with several partners (Ki Culture, IRPA, Bizot Groupe, C2RMF, ICOMOS, Ecole du Louvre, INP…).
She is currently co-piloting the plan for Sustainable development at Musée du Louvre and co-directing a collective handbook called “Facing Ecological Crise in Museums” that will be published at the Documentation Française in 2025.
